All about Vegan Social Events
In September 2016, Love Wild Live Free hosted the first ever Toronto Vegan Social Event, bringing together influencers and media makers for a celebration of the local thriving vegan scene. This event was unique to the vegan community and well received by all who were involved. Vegan Social Events in July and September of 2017 were open to the public and completely sold out - with line-ups out the door!
Let's Make This Toronto's Most Sustainable Event Yet!
At Vegan Social Events, we believe that veganism and sustainability go hand-in-hand. Animal agriculture plays a significant role as a contributing cause of serious environmental issues including, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, species extinction, ocean dead zones, and rainforest destruction, just to name a few.
As consumers, we can take the power into our own hands by voting with our dollar every time we make a purchase.
On average, a vegan diet saves:
4,200 liters of water per day
45 lbs of grains per day
20 lbs of CO2 equivalent per day
2.8 meters squared of forested land per day (source)
We can also make sustainable choices when it comes to the ways in which the items we purchase are packaged, by selecting products with zero packaging or compostable packaging, and by using reusable items like cloth shopping bags and produce bags.
All of our vendors will be working with us to make this a zero / minimal waste event. We have requested that vendors consider the environment when preparing for this event by limiting the number of boxes, plastic, and other waste that may be produced from their booths. We are also encouraging our guests to bring their own reusable containers, cutlery, metal/glass straws, reusable bottles and bags. Every little bit counts!
If you would like to learn more about the environmental issues that are related to animal agriculture please visit www.cowspiracy.com/facts.
The venue has been generously donated by Organic Garage. The event will be held outside at their Junction location, with a beautiful view of the downtown Toronto skyline. Organic Garage's Junction location is celebrating it's 1 year anniversary since its grand opening.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Tree Canada / Arbres Canada, a registered charity proudly dedicated to planting and nurturing trees. For 25 years, the charity has engaged communities, governments, corporations and individuals in the pursuit of a greener and healthier living environment for Canadians.
Since 1992, Tree Canada has greened more than 1,100 urban centres, BIAs, indigenous communities, schools and hospitals throughout Canada. They have greened more than 600 schoolyards, and planted more than 10,000 edible fruit and nut trees and shrubs in communities all across Canada to help fight urban food insecurity.
Special Guests at the Stokes Cheese Stage
This event is proud to feature special guest speaking engagements and panel discussions, including keynote speaker James Aspey, an Australian Animal Rights Activist and cookbook author, vegan blogger and YouTube creator Sam Turbull of It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken. A BIG thank you to our generous stage sponsor Vegan Stokes Cheese! Make sure to visit their booth at the event - they will have lots of delicious vegan cheese to sample, and will be offering special event pricing on all of their delicious cheeses!
We are thrilled to have James Aspey joining us as a keynote speaker. James has overcome a battle with leukaemia, an eating disorder, and drug abuse, to become one of the most well-known animal rights activists in the current movement. He is best known for taking a 1-year vow of silence to raise awareness about animal cruelty, in addition to cycling 5,000 km across Australia and being tattooed for 25 hours straight for charity. James will have his sustainably made activism t-shirts, Increase the Peace Clothing, available for sale at the event.
We are also super excited to have Sam Turnbull, a local Toronto vegan and creator of the popular blog, It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken and YouTube Channel by the same name, joining us as a special guest! Sam will be hosting a talk on how she went vegan coming from a family of chefs, butchers, and hunters. The talk will be followed by a book signing of her debut cookbook Fuss-Free Vegan: 101 Everyday Comfort Food Favorites, Veganized. Her cookbook will also be available for sale.
T.O.A will be joining the Stokes Cheese Stage as our DJ! Hailing from Toronto - T.O.A is a professional singer, songwriter, DJ and entertainer that is often referred to as having a voice that soothes the mind, heals the body, and touches the soul. T.O.A lives her life guided by love and believes in peace and harmony amongst all living and sentient beings. She hopes that through her music, you can feel her energy and find the same state of mind.
