Subject II Change is One Part Lust for Life, One Part Rock N' Roll
I have been attracted to therapeutic gemstones for as long as I can remember. I am always surrounded by crystals - I wear them as jewellery, carry them in my pockets and even sleep with them under my pillow. People always ask me about how to choose the "right" gemstones, so I have called on Canadian crystal jewellery designer, female entrepreneur and owner of Subject II Change jewellery & accessory company, AJ Molinari for all of the answers. In the interview below, AJ has shared her expertise on selecting a piece that is right for you, how to shop for crystals, plus all of the jewellery trends to look out for this Summer 2016.
Subject II Change has shared a special Promo Code exclusively for Love Wild Live Free Readers. Enter code LWLF10 for 10% off your next purchase on www.yourfavouritesubject.com (valid for the month of June 2016).
I have also teamed up with AJ for an exciting Instagram Giveaway featuring a beautiful piece that has not yet been released online. You'll find all of the details at the end of this article, so keep reading!
Tell us your story! How did you get your start with Subject II Change?
The company was officially registered in 2010. At that time, I was graduating University, working five jobs to pay my bills and I decided to jump in feet first and launch my jewelry company. I quit every single job and gave it everything I had! Sounds exciting but the truth is, I was scared and my parents thought I was crazy. By 2011 Subject II Change was on the map, carried in a combination 5 retail stores and studios and it's been growing steadily ever since. I am not going to lie and say that it has always been easy, there are always going to be those days of doubt and insecurities, but if you have the determination to keep pushing through not matter what happens, things will pay off. You need to be patient because if you truly feel that it's meant to be, the puzzle pieces will fit into place.
What has been the most exciting part about running your own jewellery business?
Seeing the growth and meeting all of the amazing people that I have met along the way! For me, this business it is about connecting with people, helping those people connect with the crystals they require at that moment in their life, and ultimately about those people connecting with themselves. Creating jewelry is a platform for me to meet people on a more personal level and often it truly becomes an emotional experience––it’s about so much more than just making a transaction. It’s also been exciting to see the company grow and develop into the company that it is today. I tell people that its my child and there are days where I need to help shape and influence it and other days where I need to let go and trust that things will work out. So far so good. I mean she doesn’t have any piercings or tattoos that I don’t know about, yet…
How did you first become interested in crystals and their healing properties?
It really all started with my own little gem collection and my wanting to know why I was so drawn to the stones that I was choosing. I started researching and then the research became a fascination and eventually I couldn’t stop. I wanted to know as much information as possible to understand how Crystals work and can be beneficial to your everyday lifestyle. Once I started down that road, that’s when the Subject II Change collections really started to expand and grow. Now, providing our customers with power crystal pieces that compliment their ever-evolving life and style has become an integral part of what we do.
What types of characteristics do you look for when sourcing the crystals that you use in your pieces?
I like to listen to my gut and see what I am most attracted to. If I find it appealing and get excited to make it into a special piece then I know my customers will have the same reaction when they see it for the first time. I also always make a point sourcing unique looking stones that are raw and in their natural form because I don’t like how mass-produced the jewelry industry has become. I want people to know that they have an original item so I source form all over the world including places like India, Bali, Portugal, Spain, British Columbia and more. When you own a Subject II Change piece, I want it to be special to you. That way when someone says, ‘Hey, where did you get that necklace from?’ You can share your story with excitement and the circle continues.
What advice would you give to readers for selecting crystals that are right for them?
As humans we are very intuitive. If you listen to your body it will guide you towards what you need. This is so important for us to do on a regular basis because the more you listen to your body, the more in tune with it you become and the clearer your desired paths become. Instinctively, we are drawn to certain crystals during the time in which we need them most. My rule is to TRUST yourself and let your body gravitate towards a crystal or piece before you find out about its properties. That said, you can bet that if it’s calling to you, it’s exactly what you’re in need of at that moment in your life. In addition, you can never go wrong with a Crystal Quartz stone. You can use it in your living space, carry it with you or wear it on your body whenever you need to cleanse, balance and harmonize.
What are some do's and don'ts when shopping for crystal pieces?
On our website, we have a Stone Meanings Page that goes into detail about the properties of each crystal, but if you are new to the crystal world I like to tell people to take it one step at a time. This goes back to listening to your body and seeing what calls to you. Read up on the properties and then listen to see if it’s the right piece for you. Sometimes, you can’t choose just one and that’s okay. It’s just a sign that your body needs a little balance and sometimes that doesn’t come from just one particular stone.
Do you have a favourite crystal?
This question is always tricky because I LOVE THEM ALL! But, if I had to choose just one, it’s the Crystal Quartz stone. I have eight in my studio alone, so you can just image how many I have in my home. I’m pretty much always wearing it or carry it on me, and when I’m doing a festival or convention I always make a point of putting it out on the tables as well. In those particular situations, there tends to be a lot of energy passing by the table and often onto me so I use QUARTZ to protect and cleanse the environment so I can stay grounded and focused.
Any tips on how to cleanse and care for crystals?
There are a few common ways to cleanse your crystals. The first thing to know is that sunlight and moonlight are great ways to do so. You can place your pieces on a windowsill; twenty-minutes in the sunlight is all you need. In the moonlight you can leave it over night until the next morning when you are ready to wear the piece. Another great way to cleanse your crystals is to use a white sage smudge stick. Let it burn around your piece and even in your home and space. It’s an excellent way to clean out negative energies. We use smudge sticks while creating and prepping. Lastly, a Quartz Crystal is an excellent harmonizing stone as well. You can place your pieces on top of the Crystal and or around it to help harmonize it.
In terms of time frame, we transmute a lot of energy and pieces should be cleansed often. We suggest every two months based on wear. If you find that you wear your piece every single day then once a month might be a better option for you. Stones should stay cold to the touch and if you find your stones are warm that means they are being filled with energy and need to be cleansed.
What are the big jewellery trends for Summer 2016?
Layers, layers, and more layers! This summer’s the more you wear the better. In terms of necklaces, mixing short with long is perfect. Start with a solid choker piece and work your way down in intervals. Mixing metals is okay too so don’t be afraid to be bold. Incorporate larger crystal pendants on your longer necklaces and mix it with dainty and chunky pieces on the shorter lengths.
As far as bracelets go, colour is a must. The more you stack the better it’s going to look and it doesn’t matter if you’re rocking them on both of your wrists either.
You’re also going to want to keep an eye out for White Howlite this season. This stone has a marbled look and so it’s classic and easy to match with most outfits. It also has awesome energetic properties! Howlite is a calming stone so it’s great for stress relief but it can also be an antidote for insomnia. For more information on Howlite and all of its many healing properties, be sure to checkout our Stone Meanings page via the Subject II Change website
What can we expect to see in the future as Subject II Change evolves?
One of our biggest goals here at Subject II Change is to reach people internationally. We have plans to do a few festivals oversees in the next little while so we’re excited to broaden our global exposure and travel. We also have aspirations of opening our own storefront as well. It would be really great to be able to create a space where people can come out to get some rad jewelry pieces but also be able to sit down and have a one on one chat with our healing experts as well as take DIY classes. We try to always remain open to whatever possibilities and opportunities that may come our way so we remain excited for whatever the future holds!
