The Honest Leaf: An Interview With Shelby Kroach

I collect tea. Yes, that’s right, I have an extensive collection of tea - loose leaf, pre-bagged, caffeinated, herbal, you name it, I’ve got it. Given my love of tea, I am excited to be featuring Shelby Kroach who is a registered nutritionist and the creator of a lovely local tea company, The Honest Leaf as an Inspirational Feature this week! I interviewed Shelby about The Honest Leaf and had the wonderful opportunity to learn more about the benefits of tea from a nutritional standpoint. I first met Shelby at the Gluten Free Garage annual Toronto event in November 2014. Her brand resonated with me as not only am I a big tea drinker, but, I am also a huge proponent of healing through foods. I absolutely love the concept behind The Honest Leaf tea blends as these teas are all wellness based and designed to support different functions in the body. Shelby has combined beautiful, organic and natural ingredients to create tea blends to help with boosting energy and the metabolism, detoxification and even sleep. 


What inspired you to create The Honest Leaf?

My goal when creating The Honest Leaf tea line was to bridge the gap between cool fun flavoured teas and health. I wanted to offer my clients/customers something that they could trust, without all the additives and flavourings that was geared towards their health.

What is the significance of your name The Honest Leaf?

My message is all in the name...Honest. I wanted to create a product that was completely transparent and honest. No hidden ingredients, no garbage. I truly believe that honesty is the best policy.

What are some of the benefits of incorporating tea into a balanced diet from a nutritional standpoint?

Tea has so many health benefits, from providing the body with antioxidants to helping soothe an upset stomach. Teas have been used for thousands of years in many cultures as medicine. Herbal teas can also count as water intake. For those that need to bump up their liquids, this is a perfect option. 

What is the difference between loose and bagged tea?

Loose leaf tea consists of full tea leaves. You can often see all of the different components in the blend. Many tea bags consist of "dustings," very small particles that have been broken down mechanically after the production of loose leaf tea. In my opinion, loose leaf tea is higher in quality and has a better flavour profile than tea bags. I will note that there are many brands out there that offer loose leaf tea in tea bags which I think is great!

How can tea be used as part of a healthy bedtime routine? 

The nature of tea in itself is very soothing and calming. Enjoying a cup of herbal tea before bed really helps to relax the body and the mind. Just try to have your tea early enough in the evening so that you aren't waking up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night!

What are some ingredients to be wary about when it comes to tea? 

I am always skeptical about flavourings. Artificial and natural. From a nutritional standpoint, I always want to put whole, natural ingredients into my body. When something has been processed or manipulated in some fashion, I tend to stay away from it.

I understand that each of your blends support a different function in the body. What are some of the benefits of each of your blends?

Detox: This has all the goodies to help support detoxification in the body. I used milk thistle, burdock root and dandelion root to really target the liver, kidneys and blood. I paired this blend with some other digestive supporting herbs such as fennel, mint and lemongrass because digestion is such a huge part of our overall health. 

Slim: This blend is all about balancing blood sugar. Pu'erh tea is the main ingredient which has been used in chinese medicine for thousands of years as an aid for cholesterol issues and blood sugar issues. I paired it with cinnamon and ginger, two spices that are significant for blood sugar control and inflammation in the body. 

Relieve: This herbal tea really targets anything from gas, bloating, nausea and heartburn.

Boost: Spices really help to rev up the metabolism and thats what this blend is all about. I've used Yerba Mate, a tea from South America, which helps to boost energy without giving the body the jitters as well as chai spices to kick your metabolism into gear. 

Soothe: This is the ultimate anti-inflammatory tea. With turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, tulsi tea and ginseng, your body and your joints will love every sip!

Serene: In the evening we like to unwind and relax. My serene blend is a combination of various herbs that help to calm the mind and the body. It's the perfect after dinner tea. 

Fresh: A refreshing immune booster. This has a beautiful lemongrass flavour with an undertone of ginger. I used green rooibos tea as the base, which is mild in flavour but has a huge antioxidant profile. 

Roast: This is a caffeine free coffee alternative. It consists of roasted chicory, roasted dandelion and clove. The nutty roasted flavour pairs really well with a little almond milk and maple syrup. The next best thing to coffee!
